The Herpes Simplex Virus, or HSV, is estimated to be present in more than 80% of the population. In most people, the infection remains dormant and asymptommatic. In its active stage, however, it is characterized by eruption of painful blisters, oral or genital, depending upon whether HSV 1 or HSV 2. Herpes is transmitted sexually, as well as by oral and respiratory fluids, and is an especially serious problem in the teenage population. Once infected, the victim is infected for life.
