Malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) … is a serious disease caused by the parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. The parasites are carried by mosquitoes (bit-er), and injected into red blood cells of the bit-ee, causing the cells to eventually burst. Malaria is a major killer, effecting mostly tropical populations, especially Africa, where children are the primary victims. Strong efforts are being made to develop an effective vaccine; in the meantime, controversy swirls about practical use of insecticides until such time as a vaccine is available.
