Giardia lamblia …is a protozoan parasite often acquired in the beautiful, pristine out-of-doors. It often causes what is known as “hiker’s diarrhea,” although children’s diapers and daycare centers are also common culprits in transmission. Giardia’s appearance is misleading, because the parasite appears to have a smiley face to those peeking in the microscope. Smiles or not, big time cramps and stomach aches often result from this deceiving little critter. A cautious approach to the old swimmin’ hole and suspicious water sources will go a long way to avoiding this insincere “pal.”
