Strep. pneumoniae “ Strep pneumo” is a bacterium responsible for blood, bone and ear infections, as well as for meningitis and pneumonia. Considering its morbidity rate in young children, its somewhat akin to a pediatrician’s “annuity!” It’s also a common nosocomial nasty, made even more so by it’s growing resistance to antibiotic therapy. A vaccine is available that is highly recommended for both children and seniors.
