Scum Though technically a phytoplanton residing on the walls of fish tanks, scum strikes us as a more global, all-inclusive microbe. After all, slime has its place in ecosystems both pleasant (rocks in a pristine, babbling brook) and not-so-pleasant (biofilm on those molars, lining tubes of beverage dispensers, water lines, et al). The specifics may differ, but when all said and done, scum really is where you find it.
