Plague (Black Death) …is a historically important bacterium known formally as Yersinia pestis. It is “credited” with annihilating a third of Europe’s population in the 14th Century. Transmitted by fleas, it survives even today as a potential killer. Prevention centers on improved sanitary conditions and eradication of ratty reservoirs.
